Should I panic?

How many times have you asked yourself this question?

Whatever the answer, know that you’ll be ok.  Panic and anxiety are everywhere these days and it can be hard to know when our nervous system is helping us get out of danger or has simply been hijacked by an untrue narrative.

I’m going to be honest with you for a moment: I still struggle with anxiety and panic. It’s not an everyday thing but it creeps up when I least expect it and there are times when I feel like I’m suffocating.

In those moments, I rely on tools and practices that I know will calm the mind and body…and I love myself enough to actually deploy them.  No shame.

Here’s a short list of my personal anti-panic/anxiety tool kit:

  • Meditation.  Even something as simple as following my breath or a guided meditation when I’m really ‘out there’.
  • Body Sensing: It’s been clinically proven that focusing on objective reality (the touch of the air on your skin, etc.) reduces panic attacks and anxiety symptoms.
  • Essential Oils: Lavender for day.  Sandalwood for night.
  • Ritual: Lighting a candle and doing a body sensing exercise, chanting a Sanskrit mantra, moon salutation, etc.  All these things are rituals that I know by heart and can draw upon to ground myself when anxiety and panic want to take over.
  • Music:  Good In/Good Out, right?  It can be very helpful to listen to relaxing music (and take deep breaths) in a time of panic.  (as a special gift, you can listen to my latest anxiety-reducing playlist HERE)

And, most importantly, I resist the urge to fight the anxiety.  It’s awful and of course we want it to be over asap but fighting against it won’t make it go away any faster.  Feel what you need to feel.  Cry it out.  Yell if you need to (into a pillow).

My gurus have taught me that there are no good or bad feelings….they are all messengers and it’s better to feel them, metabolize, and learn.  Otherwise they become lodged inside and it’s a lot harder to get them out. 🙂

Speaking Personally: My own Digital Detox results

Imma get a little personal up in here.  Why?  As a health coach, it’s my job to create a safe space for vulnerability because it’s only when all the cards are out on the table that we can truly start the healing process. 

In corporate, we say ‘You can’t change what you can’t measure’.  In my personal life and Ayurvedic coaching practice, I say ‘You can’t change what you can’t be real about’.   So, in that spirit, I’m going to get real with you. 

Back in May, I honestly thought my life was falling apart.  If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably noticed that I pretty much fell off the face of the planet during that time.  I told my Facebook group (the Worn-Out to Warrior Sisterhood) that I needed to take an indefinite hiatus from admin duties and would likely be off all social media for the foreseeable future.  Thankfully (and not surprisingly because all the women in that group are amazing), everyone was supportive and told me to do what I needed to do to get well.  

So I went dark.  For a full month, I was off social media 100%.  I deleted the FB app from my phone.  And didn’t check it via desktop.  Facebook was the primary way I engaged with my clients, put myself out there in hopes of engaging with new people who’d benefit from my work, etc. so there was a huge risk to my business doing this…but I knew it was necessary.

And you know what happened?

Everything.  

I felt myself become lighter.  A lot of people report withdrawal symptoms when they do a Digital Detox for the first time (especially with social media) but I didn’t have any of that.  I was more of the ‘Burn it all to the ground’ mindset which helped.  But I felt myself a lot lighter, energetically.  And I started to notice a few things:

  1. More juicy connections with friends & family.  With social media off the table, I began to reach out to people via email and text to schedule time with them and hear about their lives in real time.  You know, old school IRL hang outs.  Most people were thrilled and I started to wonder if we all hid behind social media because we’re scared of either being an annoyance or being rejected.  
  2. I stopped waking up instantly anxious and depressed.  I realized that the first thing I did every morning, even before getting out of bed, was check my social media and email to see if my clients needed anything from me.  But, overtime, I spent more and more time on Facebook and all the stories of the latest horrors filled my freshly awake eyeballs and psyche. OMG this is such a terrible habit and, for me, it set me on a path to white-knuckling through the day…all day.  My intentional Digital Detox broke that habit right quick.  But here’s the key, I didn’t just sleep longer to fill the time.  I filled that time with meditation, more time with my dog, some yoga, whatever felt good in the moment.  It’s not enough to cut out bad habits…you need to replace them with sustainable nourishing NEW habits so you don’t revert back. 
  3. My confidence came back.  Most of us can cope with one crisis at a time.  I had about 5 happen all at once.  And I just about lost it.  I thought ‘What am I doing coaching others out of burnout when my life is falling apart?  I’m a fraud!’  No, I wasn’t a fraud…I just had the Universe deal me a really rough hand and temporarily lost sight of my own wellness and self-care practice. I knew I had to double-down on the methods I knew work (meditation, yoga, good food, setting boundaries, etc.)  If anything, being real about all this made me a BETTER coach because I had a booster shot of empathy for people when we first start working together.   Over time, my confidence came back.  I’m far enough away from those events that I can see the silver lining (but would prefer not to go through that again!).

All of that just from deleting FB and staying off social media for a month?!  You betcha.

Yes…and. Thoughts on Strength and Softness.

Ok, confession time: I haven’t been to my community yoga studio in a few months.  Here are some excuses:

  1. Work has been nuts.  As a corporate warrior, there are times when that needs to take up more of my time and brain space.  In those times, I up my self-care, am extra nice to my husband (and let him take the lion’s share home responsibilities), and repeat to myself ‘This is not forever’.  
  2. Speaking of husband…I GOT MARRIED!  We got married a little under 2 weeks ago and while the wedding was wonderful, it felt like another full time job in the weeks leading up to the event.  
  3. I chose sleep over yoga.  Just keeping it real. 

But with the work and wedding insanity behind me, my body was like ‘Ok, get thee to the studio post haste!’  I’d kept up with my personal at-home practice but there’s something special about practicing in community.  ‘Sangha’ in Sanskrit.  

So as I twisted and turned and listened to the teacher’s voice, her words really struck me:

There’s a dance between strength and softness.  

To feel this in your body, try to balance on one foot.  If you’re too rigid, you’ll fall over.  If you’re too loose, you’ll fall over.  To have balance, you must find the perfect ratio between strength and softness. 

Think about this in terms of meditation as well:  If you try REALLY HARD to focus, you’ll end up getting frustrated and give up.  If you’re too loose, you’ll fall asleep.  (which, hey, sometimes you need that but meditation isn’t necessarily the right time or place!)

All that is to say: balance is key.

Sometimes you need to be super rigid and strong (mentally, physically, etc.).  Conversely, sometimes you need to be extra soft (like if you’re recovering from illness).  But neither state is sustainable in the long term.  

How do you handle your unique and dynamic balance between soft and strong?
