Yes…and. Thoughts on Strength and Softness.

Ok, confession time: I haven’t been to my community yoga studio in a few months.  Here are some excuses:

  1. Work has been nuts.  As a corporate warrior, there are times when that needs to take up more of my time and brain space.  In those times, I up my self-care, am extra nice to my husband (and let him take the lion’s share home responsibilities), and repeat to myself ‘This is not forever’.  
  2. Speaking of husband…I GOT MARRIED!  We got married a little under 2 weeks ago and while the wedding was wonderful, it felt like another full time job in the weeks leading up to the event.  
  3. I chose sleep over yoga.  Just keeping it real. 

But with the work and wedding insanity behind me, my body was like ‘Ok, get thee to the studio post haste!’  I’d kept up with my personal at-home practice but there’s something special about practicing in community.  ‘Sangha’ in Sanskrit.  

So as I twisted and turned and listened to the teacher’s voice, her words really struck me:

There’s a dance between strength and softness.  

To feel this in your body, try to balance on one foot.  If you’re too rigid, you’ll fall over.  If you’re too loose, you’ll fall over.  To have balance, you must find the perfect ratio between strength and softness. 

Think about this in terms of meditation as well:  If you try REALLY HARD to focus, you’ll end up getting frustrated and give up.  If you’re too loose, you’ll fall asleep.  (which, hey, sometimes you need that but meditation isn’t necessarily the right time or place!)

All that is to say: balance is key.

Sometimes you need to be super rigid and strong (mentally, physically, etc.).  Conversely, sometimes you need to be extra soft (like if you’re recovering from illness).  But neither state is sustainable in the long term.  

How do you handle your unique and dynamic balance between soft and strong?

Taking My Own Advice

Hi everyone!

I hope this summer has brought you lots of sunshine, popsicles, and barefoot picnics.

There are some big changes happening around here at Katie Meyer Ayurveda HQ and I wanted to take a moment to reflect and share what’s been going on and how I’ve had the opportunity to remember to take my own Ayurvedic advice.

The biggest change is that I’m moving away from one-off appointments in favor of a 6-week program commitment. The reasons for this are many-fold but the biggest reason is that changes take time and it doesn’t matter how many pieces of advice I give you in an appointment…if there isn’t follow up and commitment, it is REALLY difficult for clients to experience the full benefits of Ayurveda.

To that end, I’ve spent the past two months designing a 6-week program and I am 100% positive it will get you out of burnout & adrenal fatigue…if you put in the work! Why burnout & adrenal fatigue? Every. Single. Client has reported symptoms of burnout and adrenal fatigue so I knew I had to start there and a 6-week program gives us a good chunk of time to slowly but surely introduce and integrate Ayurvedic wisdom into your daily routine. Slow and steady wins the race, right? (or, in this case: banishes the burnout)

The program is called The 5-Step Formula for Banishing Burnout & Adrenal Fatigue Naturally (without quitting your job) and is specifically aimed at busy professionals with demanding jobs and home responsibilities that just won’t quit. It’s the formula that I used to ELIMINATE my own burnout and I’ve worked with western doctors, my Ayurvedic mentors, nutrition coaches, and more to make sure this program is effective and something my clients can stick to.

As I write this, the butterflies are flying around in my belly because I’m about to launch this program to the world via a live Masterclass tonight @ 7pm PST. You guys, I have poured so much heart, soul, love, and a few tears designing this program, building my slide deck, and diving deeper in APIs, Facebook pixels, and CSS than I ever thought I’d need to.

And that’s when I realized I needed to pause and chill. Take my own advice. Practice my own burnout busting tips and take a moment to recognize what’s about to happen.

So, with that, I’m going to take a nap (!!), have a light dinner, meditate, and then do some jumping jacks to prep for the Masterclass! Hope to see you there!

My Favorite Products for Supporting an Ayurvedic Lifestyle

Happy Day-After-Solstice!

It doesn’t feel like it here in Seattle, but we are now officially in the Pitta season of the year.  Long days, high temperatures, sun dresses, and an abundance of fresh produce!  Admittedly, I’m more a fan of fall (Vata season) but I’ve made my peace with summer and that shining orb in the sky (although I always wear sunscreen and hide under shade trees!).

I’ve gotten a lot of questions lately about what products I recommend to support an Ayurvedic lifestyle on a daily basis so I thought I’d compile a list of objects and places that have helped and encouraged me to stay in touch with my Ayurvedic goals.  I am not sponsored by any of these companies…I just really like them! 🙂

  1. 100% Pure Maracuja Mascara in Dark Chocolate

100% pure

OMG this mascara is amazing.  It’s cruelty-free and made with only natural ingredients…including chocolate!  Seriously, it smells like chocolate.  Plus, the packaging is a beautiful rose gold color and feels really luxe in your hand.  Sure, it’s not specifically related to Ayurveda but I enjoy makeup and beauty so finding a good mascara was a must for me!

  1. Banyan Botanicals: Daily Swish (Mint Flavor)

I love Banyan Botanicals as a company and highly recommend their Ayurvedic resources and products.  They know what they’re doing!  This product is specifically for oil pulling (which I’m sure I’ll write about in a later post) and works really well.  Plus, it’s minty!

I’m a believer in Banyan’s supplements and, for me, Kapha Digest is where it’s at.  I have a Kapha body and a Pitta mind and my personal struggle is burning up ama.  This supplement is a powerhouse of pungent herbs (pippali, ginger, and black pepper) that helps me balance out my Kapha and keep me on track.

Ok, I have a thing for subscription boxes.  They’re like presents that come every month!  This one from Herb Stop is a new favorite of mine.  Every month, they send you three essential oils plus an oil blend (usually in a roller ball).  Also included are DETAILED (like, really detailed) descriptions of the oils, how they can be used, recipe suggestions, and more.  The oils are 100% pure, ethically sourced, and cruelty free.  Give them a shot!

I have been coming here for YEARS.  It’s basically my version of heaven.  You walk into the beautiful shop and are immediately hit with the delicious scent of herbs and spices.  Then you open your eyes and see that there are HUNDREDS of spices for you to choose from.  Plus, they have a reading room filled with thoughtfully curated cooking resources.  If you’re lucky enough to live close to Seattle, check out the shop.  For those outside our fair city, you can order spices online.
